Alfred Vail's genealogical research papers ca. 1851-1902

Between 1837 and 1844, inventor Alfred Lewis Vail worked together with Samuel F.B. Morse in the development and spread of the telegraph. In 1848, Vail moved to his home town, Morristown, New Jersey, and spent the last ten years of his life conducting genealogical research. Correspondence, research notes and notebooks, and family charts on the Vail family, compiled by Alfred Vail, including questionnaires completed by family members. Includes inventory in Box 1. Index cards refer to the 20 bound volumes of correspondence and research notes, compiled by Henry Vail, ca. 1902.

Jerimiah Vail was born about 1618 in the west of England, emigrated to New England in 1639 and first located in Salem. Massachusetts. Moved to Southold, Long Island and died there in 1687.
